Balades exhibition, solo show by Hubert Marot

The Franklin Azzi Endowment Fund is delighted to host the exhibition Balades by artist Hubert Marot.

Balades brings together “a series of photographs, two installations, and a video, all reflecting a state I would describe as circumspect. His [Hubert Marot's] practice is illusionistic: the photographs are paintings, the installations are sculptures; but it is also careful, astute, and meticulous. It stems from observation, from the attentive gaze he casts around him. He [Hubert Marot] works with photography, painting, and installation, often in forms that are precariously established. He is also an artist who embraces a tradition of skeptical humor toward his works as well as his environment, which seems placed under a bell jar, beneath a dome of melancholy and light paranoia.

First and foremost, there are his photographs—living or hypnagogic still lifes—that sit between states of sleep and semi-wakefulness, photographed using a Canon AE-1 film camera equipped with a compact and powerful flash to create stark shadows reminiscent of old police photographs.”
