Nouvelle AOM - Franklin Azzi Architecture, ChartierDalix architectes, HARDEL LE BIHAN ARCHITECTES - is the winner of the competition for the transformation of the Guillot-Bourdeix Tower in Lyon!
With our partners REDMAN, Icade Promotion and heritage architect Charlotte Vergély, we won the "Reinventing Cities" call for projects initiated by the City of Lyon and C40 Cities. Launched in 2022, this international competition aims to convert an architectural landmark in Lyon's tertiary sector into an exemplary site for the post-Carbon city.
This ambitious refurbishment project plans to develop almost 13,500 m2 of housing, reversible offices, retail space, business premises dedicated to the SSE, a hub for low-carbon mobility, a bistronomic restaurant and a health center.
Our project illustrates the infinite potential of built heritage to invent the city of tomorrow. As an exemplary reconversion, it will preserve as much as possible the existing buildings, including the heritage complex composed of the tower and auditorium built in 1972 and designed by architects Pierre Bourdeix and Paul Guillot, which housed the CIRC (International Center for Research on Cancer) until 2022. The Tour Guillot's attributes, such as its 4m floor spacing and broad spines, were all assets we relied on to design its metamorphosis. The multi-purpose base, which will promote human proximity and the development of social links, will be oriented towards the SSE, the Social and Solidarity Economy, and will be supported by the solidarity real estate companies ESSENTIEL_ and Base Commune, as part of the Lyon 2030 approach.
Facing this emblematic edifice, two new buildings complete the faubourien block and create a new pedestrian crossing. Their ultra-low-carbon construction system, combining wood structure, bio-sourced insulation and geosourced partitioning, encourages the use of local resources.
The massive renaturation of the site, using ground planting and preserving existing trees, is also at the heart of the project. From the edible garden to the west, to the wooded park to the east, the CIRC island will be made accessible and open, benefiting from the freshness offered by this renaturation.
